Hey all! My buddies 15hp works flawlessly, but jumps from forward gear into neutral at 3/4 speed or higher. Distance anywhere from 100yds to a mile. I have made sure the motor shifts normally by moving prop out of water and shifting at the handle. Seems to snap into and out of each gear normally. I'll refer to the following schematic: Johnson Cylinder & Crankcase Parts for 1981 15hp J15RCIS Outboard Motor

This one has the plastic shift lever #49. The spring detent/support pieces that hold that lever in the gear selected are in place and apply force to the detent spaces on the plastic shift lever. The shift lever itself is oriented correctly in relation to the detent spring(s), as I checked it to my 15hp, and it all appears equal, and I don't believe that's the issue of why it's jumping to neutral.

I've had a 15 in the past that had a bad clutch dog, and jumped out of forward to neutral and BANG back into forward.. classic clutch dog/forward gear interface failure.

My question: Is the jumping to neutral under power due to linkage issue at the area of that shift lever #49? Or could he have a clutch dog rounding off, pushing to neutral under power, and when it pushes to neutral, it makes the spring detent fall to the neutral position on that shift lever (49), thus keeping it in neutral for a fun over-rev event?

Additionally, When shifting manually, it appears to snap into gear normally in the lower unit.. ie, the spring and ball detent (#'s 10 and 11) seem to function normally (from this schematic: Johnson Gearcase Parts for 1981 15hp J15RCIS Outboard Motor ). It appears to have a good 'stroke' into forward gear also.

Hoping someone else has run into this particular issue and can advise. I'm a bit miffed, as it seems like a clutch dog/forward gear interface issue, w/o the 'bam' of slamming back into gear.

I told him to bring a black, rubber bungee cord on the next run, shift to forward and secure the bungee cord w/force to pull and keep pressure on the shift handle forward to see if it still wants to jump out. If it bangs like a normal clutch dog issue, I guess I'll have my answer..

Thanks for your consideration, and have a great day!!

Seems like you already found your answer. Dog and gear.
