I had the carbs done because of a rough idle/stalling problem. This fixed that but not too long after it seems like it is only at half throttle when it's actually at WOT. Mercury dealer was supposed to have checked power packs and other electrical stuff and everything was ok. The motor starts good when cold, idles good, and even fast idles normally. It just won't go at WOT. It doesn't have an engine miss, it really runs and starts fine. fuel pump?
fuel filter?
other?
If it is the pump or filter, is this something relatively easy to replace/rebuild? thank you

If it doesn't have a miss at high speed, it just want go there. Maybe something wrong with your linkage to your carbs.

I know you said that the mechanics checked electricals, but, I had the same problem with my 1983 Merc 115. Turned out to be the stator. Cost me around $100 to fix myself. Wasn't very difficult to do. Mercs are notorious for stator problems from what I hear, they need to be replaced every couple of years.

My 1979 Merc 140 has the same stator that it had the day I got it, 4 years ago. I have never heard that the stator is a problem on the Merc's.

Craig

I don't think it's linkage because it will skyrocket in rpms with the fast idle. can anyone tell me how to check the stator? do i need a volt/ohm meter or a special tool? is it easy to get to?

jl4bud:

There is a BIG difference between reving in neutral and in gear. That motor can rev up to 6000 rpm's in neutral running on 4 or 5 cylinders, but put it in gear and it would fall on it's face.

Check the simple things first.

Craig
