82 merc90??

Hi just found this forum a few days ag, and its full of good stuff!<br /> I was just given a pair of boats! FREE so almost anything is considered here.<br /> My questions are one boat has a merc90 82 I think.#s are 6246230 on that one. Is this a crank or propshaft HP rating? It has not been ran for about 5 years, aside from impeller and a good carb cleaning and any obvious fuel line stuff is there anything I should be woring about?<br /><br /> The other one is 72 johnson which I dont know about, the guy who gave them to me said that it had not gone anywhere for 12 or so years, not from any problem, just stoped using it. any special thoughts on that? <br /><br /> I dont know much about 2strroke. Are eithor of these oil injected. if not how do those after market oil adder things work?<br /><br /> anyone have a favorite between the two?<br /><br /> Hope this isnt too much for one spot but...Thanks fo any help.

Hello and Welcome to the site.<br /><br />You are correct about the year of the 90hp Mercury.<br /><br />90 5996390 - 6246855 1982 6 cyl <br /><br />I do believe that in 82, Mercury was all prop rated. The inline 6 motor was and is IMO the best motor Mercury ever made. That is all I have ever had on my boats. Not sure if the 82 had Oil Injection or not, it's 50:1 though. the first generation of Oil Injection (Autoblend) wasn't a great system. Personally, I feel much better mixing my own, that way I know it's done and there is no pump to go out and take down a motor.<br /><br />I hope this helps some, there will be more knowlegable people adding to this, I am sure of it.<br /><br />Here is a picture of my motor.<br /><br /> http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13002 <br /><br />Craig

thanks for the replys guys. I want to go get these things now and start tinkering...but the guy who gave (What a guy!!) them to me wants to wait until the ground is a little harder. been raining here in iowa.
