Looking for some advise (encouragement actually) on replacing the water pumb shaft (OMC Part 909753). Model 302FTHRCNC Vert Drive: 982740.
I have 2 concerns: First, if the splines are worn down on the pump drive shaft should I expect to have to replace the mating upper drive shaft as well?
The second concern is one of part id. This is not the orginal outdrive unit as it was replaced with a used unit from a V6 OMC unit (insurance company deal) and mine is a 3.0 4 cyl unit. My OMC service manual and parts catalog is for the original unit. Will OMC part 909753 (pump drive shaft) fit either unit?

What kind of surprises should I expect when I start the replacement? As I mentioned above, I did a drive shaft replacement in the Intermediate Housing and survived it.

Yes, replace the upper shaft . If you did the intermediate housing work and you have a manual and tools go for it. You don't have any shiming to do and to reseal it you don't need any special tools ( well maybe a press to remove the upper vertical shaft )the job isn't that bad.The pump shaft is the same so all you need is the upper vertical shaft , a seal kit ,new nuts for the shafts and gear oil.I'd put a pump kit in it if you haven't done so in a few years.

Hey thanks Richard, I figured on needing all that stuff except for the new shaft nuts. I guess you know something special about those old nuts.
Plan to replace the wp (kit)as it has not been replaced by me but as I mentioned it was a replacement sterndrive about 8 years ago and have no history for it before that.
Thanks again for the reply and encouragement... I enjoy working on 'stuff' but like to know what to expect (besides what the manual says)

Well the job is done and successful at that. I would like to thank Richard, fka **** for the help and encouragement. The job was not that bad and really not very expensive.
The problem was worn splines on the lower water pump shaft where it joins the upper drive shaft.

Thanks again the the help :)
