Picked up an '83 50hp johnnyrude according to the model number. Powerhead looks different than an '87 that I looked at. Trying to find out what I need to go from manual to remote steering as everything has been removed. Checked out the diagrams at ishopmarine but they were no help. I think I have figured out a way to mount my shift cable but am just more than curious if the powerhead has been swapped. The number on the welsh plug is 392630 RPH. Can anyone tell me what this powerhead is from? On Friday I will be back to look at the '87 and get a picture, then I'll get a picture of mine and post it if I still need some help. Thanks again guys.

Re: '83 50hp power head

Fireman, i went through the exact same struggles with my boat that came with a 50hp Johnson. The number on the welch plug is of no signifigance :-( the rph stands for rebuilt power head. You can determine the date by carefully looking at the diagrams on ishop marine and comparing it to your motor. One that really got it for me was the use of a spark arestor in the air line for the fuel/VRO pump. mine (a 87) has one that goes in the line. earlier ones never had one, and later ones had one that are bolted into the block and are blue. It is a pain in the you know where, but that is how i figured out mine!
