I picked up this motor for cheap. Along with the motor came a bag of parts...... ugh. So looks like they were working on the fuel pump and the coil and either gave up or got lost along the way. I can probably figure out the fuel pump connections, but can someone look at the coil wiring please? It doesn't look right. ( missing a black wire from on the top right coil i believe).

I was comparing it to this image ( NOT my motor, but from an earlier Iboat posting ) I notice a wire attached to the upper coil lug that is not on my motor. No I haven't done a spark check, but I'm connecting the fuel pump and I'll check for spark as well.

If I am seeing the pictures correctly, you are concerned about the wire attached to the right hand bolt on the top coil (sample motor).

Again, if I am seeing correctly, that wire is connected to the left hand bolt on the lower coil on your motor.

It is a ground wire from somewhere else and makes no electrical difference where it is grounded. Sorry, I don't have a wiring diagram to see exactly what it is grounding. But both of your coils are grounded, so you are ok in that respect.

Thanks, that what I was hoping for! I did get a spark on both when I pulled the cord so that should be good. I've got the fuel pump back together so lets hope I get it all back correctly. So cold here that I can't run the motor on muffs. My hose is froze!

Just as well -- chance to mention you should test in a tank of some sort, or in the lake if spring ever comes. Water level has to be about 6 inches above the water pump (w/p at the lower unit joint). The small square pump can be difficult to repair, and may be cheaper to replace.

Why buy a new pump when a new diaphragm is $4 or a repair kit with instructions.

Bought one of the $15-20 pumps a year or so ago, and it has been fine so far.

I ordered a few spares myself since last year .. one has been in service for a year and no comebacks

some have stated concerns about the diaphragms going bad

….I picked up some nitrile sheets and will fix any that do go bad with better quality nitrile.

same goes for cheap coils at 17$ cdn free shipping

Thanks for the help so far. I have run into another issue. When removing the carb to rebuild it, I noticed this plastic piece broken. I'll order the part i suppose but I'm having trouble understanding where that round part on top goes. And, why there is an adjustment screw that obviously just puts pressure on the plastic which I'm assuming caused it to break. What does that screw do?

Round part ?

You mean the cam follower roller ?? It's the part of the cam follower assembly which makes contact with the cam.

The adjustment screw is used to synchronize the throttle operation with the ignition. Basically the roller should barely make contact with the cam when midway between the marks or rather that the throttle should just start to open at this point See your workshop manual for full details.

Do not mess with the adjustment on old engines because the plastic becomes brittle with age and will easily break, as you have discovered
