Hello again, it's the newb. I put the key in the ignition and nothing happens when I try to start the motor. So I got to looking at the starter solenoid, comparing it to the pic in my seloc and it appears to be wired completely backwards. The way it's wired right now, starting from the upper most contact, is as follows:
Top contact----to the starter
Next one down---to ground
Next one down---yellow w/red stripe
Bottom contact--to battery

The seloc shows it completely opposite. When I take my ohm meter and read the yellow w/red striped wire to the solenoid housing, I get continuity. Does that sound right? It would seem to me the ground should read to the housing seeing as it's wired to the cut out switch. Can somebody verify the set up on their motor or send me a better reference then the Seloc??? By the way, the picture I am going from is on page 6-19. Thanks. Chad

Re: '83 70 hp solenoid question

The way that it is wired now is perfectly Ok. It also would be ok the other way.

One small terminal goes to one end of the solenoid coil winding. The other small terminal goes to the other end of the coil winding. So that means there is continuity (less coil resistance) between the two terminals. Swap them and the result is the same.

If you check from the yellow/red to ground it will be as I just said. Continuity less coil resistance--because the other terminal is grounded.

Are you getting voltage on the red/yellow wire when you turn the key? If not, you may have a bad neutral start switch in the remote control. Or it's not in neutral.

Sometimes you aircraft mechanics scare me. Hey, just kidding. Keep up the good work.

Well, now that it's light out, I am going to test for voltages. I didn't want to compete with the moon last night as the brightest light. LOL!!! :D

look on the engine for a possible blown fuse, dont recall if your eng has it but it would be in a red plastic water proof housing under the cowling, possibly on the starbord side or top rear of engine, just dangling with the wires

I checked the fuse as Mikesea suggested....it's good. I went through the troubleshooting procedures in the manual and came up with a bad solenoid. Thanks for the help!!
