83 Evinrude 35HP Long shaft ignition wiring....

Gents, as some of you may have remember... I was unfortunate enough to have a 35 horse Johnson seahorse blow up on me last year. I have since created a frankenmotor between that and a 1983 Evinrude 35 horse and have everything just about dialed in.

The only issue that I have is trying to wire up the ignition on the Evinrude. The wiring was different on the Johnson as it already had the ignition and wires hooked up to it. It appears that someone cut the ignition wires on the Evinrude, leaving only 1 positive wire from the top of the solenoid. When the battery cables are attached to the motor and the positive wire from the solenoid is jumped to the positive side of a battery, the motor will turn over and fire as if you were turning the key to an ignition.

My concern is that with an older engine such as this, will it be damaging in the event that I just hook up a simple key or push-button ignition to this wire?

I am assuming running it from the battery to the ignition and back to the positive wire on the solenoid.

Thanks in advance, picture is attached.

Awesome diagram.
I will wire up an ignition switch to it and then I believe I will be good. Now that the motor is back up to snuff, I can sell the damn thing and hopefully soften the blow of the scrap pile of aluminum I bought last year, once called a boat.

Any ideas on wiring up the ignition so I can stop it? As of now, I'm not so sure about adding a push-button ignition only as I'm not sure how I will be able to stop the motor the console. I have an old ignition switch and wiring harness from a 78 Johnson seahorse that I thought would work, however if there are 5 wires on it and I'm not sure where they all go

You can add a kill switch along with a start switch. Connect the kill wire to one side of switch and the other side grounded to the motor.

Not sure I'm tracking. So the kill switch would be wired to the push button start and grounded to the motor?

No if you want push button start then you need a separate kill switch button. Or maybe a lanyard type, If you have an electric choke, maybe the best would be to find the correct switch. That way you can start, stop and choke from one switch.

You say you have an ignition switch maybe this will help.

I picked up a push button switch today and a toggle switch. Figured I could use the toggle as a kill switch?

This is all I have. The Johnson that this came off of was wires differently. Mainly into the could and what not, where the electronics on the Evinrude don't have a place to wire them up.

Maybe the push button and on and off toggle will be easier.

I saw your video and I am glad you got the the start switch working. If it was me I would be running it about at least a foot deeper in the bucket. Just imagine when on a boat and sitting at the dock those clam shells half way up the leg are under the water, or maybe even more. Once up and running it will be still lower in the water than what you are in the bucket.

Yeah, I need to set up a deeper bucket for that. Just wanted something to be able to cycle water through in the shop without having to drag everything out of there and put the muffs on.

I think she is running at a higher idle, I need to dial her down a bit. Then........find a boat to put her on, or sell it.
