83 mercury 50hp can"t unlock trim pin

I have to pull the pin out rase the engine then put it back in.the latch release lever does nothing.just bought the boat this winter,took it out this past sunday it was to cold to investgate so any info on the workings.

Try moving the remote's shift lever into fwd gear.

thank you very much!pushed shifter into forward and bingo problem solved. i am a new boater & new member don"t want to be a pest but why does it work that way.agian many many thanks.

You don't want the motor locked down while running in fwd gear. If you hit something the motor will pop up and hopefully not damage anything. When in reverse you want the motor locked so the prop doesn't pull it up out of the water.
