83 mercury 50hp

I removed the foot to replace the impeller. When I took it down the copper water pipe had a few pieces of broken plastic stuck in the end. They were about 3/4of an inch or so. What is that? Is there something that goes on the end of the water pipe where it fits onto the motor??

The pieces were in the end that goes into the engine.

My 73 has a white plastic guide tube that my pipe slides into. It broke apart a few years back. My local Merc dealer happened to have one on the shelf.
