Hello. New to the page. I just got my 2nd boat, definitely an upgrade. It’s a 84 forester 16ft with a 90 hp evinrude vro. Don’t know to much about it. Just had it out for the first time, idles a little rough. Cracked her down, ran good, felt like it was slipping then accelerating when turning. Would “slip” when WOT. Eventually when we slowed down it died, then wouldn’t crank over. Started back up and got her home. What is happening or causing this. Thanks

I agree, 1st step compression.

depending on how experienced you are at boating the "slipping" could simply be cavitation or it could be a failing hub in the prop (spun hub.) I say experience because most folks with significant boating under their belts know what cavitation sounds/feels like.

As for the motor quitting, you need to make sure you are cooling. You should be able to hold your hand on the top of the heads while operating. Less than 140 F.

But, do a compression test before spending a dime.

Post a pix of the rear of the boat with the motor trimmed down, the motor may be too high which causes slip (cavitation).
Otherwise you can mark your prop and the bushing inside it sits on and see if they misalign when out which would indicate the prop bushings worn.
