Hello,
I have a 1984 Mercury Black Max 200HP that I finally got back onto the water after several years of being dry.
When I ran the boat on a test run, I found that the prop hub had spun and I was not able to get onto plane.. RPMs would climb but boat felt like it was slipping back into the hole.
I took the prop to the repair shop and it is being repaired right now. The repairman said it looked to him that the hub had spun also.
Needless to say, I disliked the idea of only having one prop for my outboard. I have been unable to locate the spare prop that is somewhere in the garage or shed, so I found a good deal on craigslist for a Tempest prop locally.
The individual I purchased the prop from stated that he had run the prop on a 80's model Merc 150 outboard. The prop was in great condition and the price, at $225, seemed right so I purchased it and took it home.
My problem comes when I have been trying to install the prop onto the shaft. The prop slides freely onto the shaft and all splines mate until about 1/4 inch from the end where the prop hangs up and doesn't want to move any further.
I hauled the boat and new prop to the local outfitter today and had it checked out. I was told that the prop should fit my outboard and that I probably had a burr on the driveshaft of the outboard. I was advised to lightly touch up the driveshaft with a small file and to clean it up good.
I have been working on it for the past few hours, but I simply cannot get the prop to get within about 1/2" of where it should end up. The service tech checked the thrust washer and said that it was the appropriate one, but the prop is hanging up in the splined area.
I have turned the prop around and placed it onto the shaft and it slides on smoothly until about 1" from the end of the splined area.. then it hangs up.
I am out of ideas and running out of patience so if anyone has some suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.
Thank You in advance.
