Bought boat ('83 Starcraft V-160) as project and trying to get motor running good before anything else. Have rebuilt all 3 carbs, replaced ignition switch, starter motor, starter solenoid/relay, plug wires, plugs (oem surface discharge), verified timing based on Seloc manual, and verified electrical components per Seloc manual. When motor cranks for few seconds, ends in backfire on exhaust end and then some fuel dribbles out of all 3 carbs (have intake shroud off while testing). I'm not sure where to go next. Have verified spark and compression from each cylinder. I know motor has not run in at least 8 yes. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The backfire?? it could be a bad gasket, letting it suck air and making it backfire.

You have the distributor? Check firing order?

Yes, sir. I have the distributor disassembled currently to check and clean. It is a breakerless distributor with preamplifier. When I put everything back together I will verify proper firing order (as I have not verified previously). I replaced the gaskets on both sides of all 3 carbs when I rebuilt the carbs. Is these the gaskets you're referring to? Also I didn't mention I have replaced ALL fuel lines and primer bulb ( also the impellor, though not related to this issue). I took the fuel pump apart to check diaphragms and clean screen. Did not see any holes or tears. The timing is set at -30 BTDC at WOT. This was set static of course. So, I will verify correct firing order first. Which other gaskets would be worth checking out if that doesn't get it running?

I won't be able to reinstall the distributor and try again until tomorrow. I really appreciate the feedback and will keep you all posted. Thanks again

So I reassembled the distributor, replaced plug wires, verified correct firing order, and gave it a shot. Fired up first try and died out after few seconds. Now this is the first time I have even heard this motor run. So needless to say, I was totally freaking out. Gave her another try with help from a little starting fluid and she fired up and ran beautiful. I can't thank you guys enough. Such a simple fix but I was thinking way past that and assumed the firing order was correct. Sometimes it helps to have someone do the thinking for me😉. Just don't tell my wife I said that! Thanks guys
