84 evinrude motor wont idle down

Ok so bought a boat and everything is good but at the dock it wont idle down for a long time. You have to basicly slam it into gear and hit the throttle. Even after cruising the lake for 30 min you get to the dock it will idle for a bit then die.

It would probably be helpful if we knew what engine we are working on, there are different controls for different engines. Can you post your model number?

I have a '84 Rude that had a similar problem last year. It would idle high and the throttle was hard to advance. Turned out that the grease on the pivot arm was sticky. This is the arm that the cables connect to one end and the other connects to the carbs on the starboard side of the engine. Thanks, Steven

It is an evenrude 140 horse but figured it out took about 2 min one of the spark plug wires were rusted and not making a connection...touched it once and it fell off so new plugs and wires to come...plus found out it runs on two cylinders while idleing and its the side the wire was falling off so no connection equals no idle!!!!

you might also run a compression test. my 1975 evinrude 75hp won't idle right cause I have a compression problem. hope that helped. best of luck!
