It's 11:30, bugs are eating me alive, so time to quit for the night.

Removing water pump from '84 F250 460.
Gasket seems to be pretty rock solid, am I supposed to take the BFH to this thing?

...2 bolts do not remove all the way, they turn, but do not come out any more, it apears this is how they are supposed to be, but I'm not sure.

...... Begin Ford Rant:
Who the FARK designed the front of this engine!!!!???

Had to remove almost every bolt that holds on the brackets for the Smog Pump, Alternator, AC, and Power Steering to get them all moved out of the way. And since when does it take 147 bolts to hold in 1 water pump? (seems like that many)

NoelMG.........

It sounds like whoever installed the last water pump on your engine might have used a "hardening" type of sealer on the gasket. All the bolts should be removed, for ease of removing the faulty water pump. The tips of the bolt threads probably have a rust build up on them, thus not allowing the two bolts to be removed. If you removed the radiator or not, you can beat, gently, on the water pump with a hammer, to break it free from the timing chain cover, where the pump is mounted. Again, it sound's like a hard setting gasket sealer could have been used.

If you have a grinder with a wire wheel, clean all the gunk off of the bolts, including the thread's. For installation of the new pump and gasket, I always use the OMC,(Johnson/Evinrude) gasket sealer on both sides of the new waterpump gasket and then I coat the thread's of the "clean" water pump mounting bolt's.

Yes, you just about have to disassemble the front half of the engine to get the water pump off.
I know, as I have a 1985 Ford E250, Club Wagon, (van), with the 460 in it, that I use to tow my boat's and I had to change the water pump a couple of years ago. Almost everything on the front part of the engine with a bolt on it, has to be removed to get the water pump off. Mine has A./C, so that increase's R&R time. Don't forget to torque the pump bolts, while you can access them.

Good luck.......... ...Bob in Calif...

Update....
My brother is at home with my dad working on it in the daylight....

He calls me about something else, he lets me know I missed 2 bolts.

...Then I hear my dad yell out in the background "THREE BOLTS"

Moral of the story:
Don't work on stuff when it's pitch dark outside at11pm with clamp lights on the hood, and don't do it when you've been working on "project shed" since 10am

Hey Noel while you are at it.... hit up the hardware store and get a bottoming tap to fit the holes. Even the cheapest will do a fine job in cleaning the threads out. I do this on all manifold and water pump bolts to "ease" my tension.
