Hi everyone! First time newbie boat owner here, just picked up a 72' glastron tri hull / 84' johnson 40 hp vro and want to use it for fishing ( engine turns over... doesn't idle long but I'll get to that later ) I've had the tilt assist stuck on the down position and finally got it up. Does anyone know if this semi stripped hex is where I would put more hydraulic fluid in? If so, any ideas on getting it out without further stripping it or where I can get a replacement screw?

are the threads stripped? the Hex part of it looks awesome in the picture. it will be an allen wrench you need to get it out.. and close all the cylinders when you fill it.. not sure if that's where you fill, might be a drain others are way more smartterer than me in here lol.. not a marine mechanic but I've been twisting wrenches for over 40 years..

An 84 model with VRO-------Not likely .-------So lets start with a model # or a bunch more pictures !-----I do not believe this system has an electric / hydraulic pump !!

Well, the replacement part will be more than I paid for the boat and engine together lol it says it's a gas port. Not sure what to do anymore

Based on the fact that 84 models did not have VRO or that touch trim , I would say you have a 1994 model motor.----Post a picture of the motor cowling.

The bit of the cowling that I can see ( post #1 ) perhaps shows the BLACK on the upper part of the decal.----Used on 1990 models.

Looks like a 1990 cowling to me.----Treat that gearcase like your first born.-----Those gearcases are not said to be ROBUST and are subject to sudden gear failure.----Only the 1989 / 90 / 91 and 92 are a direct replacement.----Scarce in some areas.

Got it....any recommendations on the seized tilt assist? I'm not paying $700 for a replacement.. im thinking of replacing it with a used electronic trim

A donor motor with trim / tilt is the best option.-------Even the trim & tilt off the 3 cylinder 25 / 35 HP will fit.

Or an aftermarket t.and t. universal unit (Panther mfg or similar). About the same as repair costs, but stand-alone unit that can be used on another rig at some point.

Brandon's Garage on YouTube has a video on how to retrofit a T&T unit onto an Evinrude 40 hp with the tilt assist abomination...in my opinion....based on what I'm hearing about it...lol

Thank you for all the support on this thread its awesome! I'm looking into the panther or cmc lifts and want to remove the tilt assist completely in fear of it seizing up or down again. Thats a good idea right?? Lol That way i can start working on getting the motor running smoothly again. Ill start a new thread if I have any more issues (which I will, learning as I go)
