Nr 1 cylinder fires with piston in top and bottom position, nr 2 fires normal i.e. in top position.

Im thinking it's the power pack, can anyone comment on that ?

Maggun....I'm curious to know how you determined this. I have an 84' 50hp myself.

It would seem to me that since the two cylinders fire opposite, that the timer coil would have to somehow be firing both. If it were bare wires then No 1 would be firing No 2 when it fires. So if indeed what you say is happening, the pack would be at fault.

Keep us posted....thanks.

I used a stroboscope to discover this. I also noticed nr 1 switches between firing at top, bottom, and both. Nr 2. is working ok, and firing only in top position as it should.

Check this clip Ignition timing

Open videoclip in quicktime.

Thought I might mention..

Symptoms is poor performance in general, struggles to get in plane, nr 1 dies quickly if I take the spark plug cap off of nr 2 cylinder. Random sudden drop in rpm...

Yes the clip is kind of poor in quality, but if you know what to look for, it should be ok.. ;)
