84 Mariner 115 SS shaft, corroded end cap

Just replaced water pump on engine used in the salt. Finally pulled the shaft out of power head and pulled PH to look at end cap. The SS shaft is great but the receiving splines in the PH have turned to dust. I have already broken one lower end cap bolt and I'm afraid to continue. Are the receiving splines attached to the end cap or will I also have to replace part of the crank? First time boat repair, any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

LS

Thanks, even if it is bad news. If I decide to replace the crank, would it be advisable to have the bearings and seals replaced in the powerhead while the shop is in there?

Yes.... and the piston rings too.

The crank is NLA and last retailed for $2000.

Might I be so bold as to suggest you will save a lot of money if you check Ebay for a good overhauled powerhead for that motor? :D

The Mercury and Mariner used the same powerhead.

-W
