Okay i need some help guys.

I have an 84 Mariner 150 serial number 06455554. The motor will start and idle fine, but lacks the power to get the boat on plane. I have had the heads off of the boat and cylinders are not scored and compression check is good. Gas has always been ran out of the motor before storage and carbs have been cleaned with no improvment.

I have noticed that there are some wirning harnesses that are brittle that go to the coils.

Would like some help on where to start.

thanks in advance

Have you done a leakdown test ? Are you over propped?Dropping spark as in high speed stator? Fuel restriction as in anti siphon valve, air leak, pinched line,or poor tank venting?Sync and link right, meaning are you actually getting WOT at the carbs and ignition? That ought to get you started.

Okay I know the linkage is working correct, I dont think that it is leaking down, cause this just happened over the winter all of a sudden. The fuel system is in great shape and flows freely. If by air leak you mean like an air leak by the carbs they are tight and i sprayed them with carb cleaner and had no rise in rpms. The prop is the same prop as before when it ran right.

Now by stator how would i go about testing that?

cowboy,

I'm going to put my two cents in, hopfully you're ready to do a little testing....

First, get a spark gap tester, at any auto parts store.. One that will allow you to plug the boot to the tester and clamp the other end to the plug lead... Test each cylinder one at a time (leaving the other plug wires attached to the plugs so the engine will run)... At idle speeds, evaluate each one carefully. Let us know if one, some, or any are weaker than another or absent....

Start with a 1/4" gap...
