Hello, a friend of mine has an '84 40HP Mariner with electric start. He had just bought the boat and used it a couple times, motor ran great. One day, while trolling, the engine just quit and stopped running. It would not turn over or even attempt to click using the ignition key. but as it turns out, the manual/rope start still works. He's checked out the obvious, being the battery, and says it's good. He actually has a couple batteries. Anyway, I'm not familiar with Mariner, but I'm thinking it has something to do with the ignition switch or starting circuit, but am not sure where to start. Apparently, the ignition switch may have been "bumped" at about the time the motor quit, but he is not sure if it actually was. If there's a way to test the ignition switch etc..., that would be fantastic. He also checked for fuses and all seemed good, though he is buying spares and will replace them anyway.

Any tips?

The 'Ignition switch' is actually three switches in one.

Ignition circuit grounds the ignition to kill spark in the Off position, 'opens' these contacts in the 'Run' position to allow the ignition system to function.

Accessory switch, provides 12 V when turned to 'On'(Not on all models)

Start switch provides 12 V to the starter relay when turned to the 'Start' position.

Wires on the backside of the switch:

Red, constant 12 V from the battery side of the starter relay, thru a fuse on the motor, usually near the starter relay.

Black, ground

Black with a thin red line, ignition kill wire.

Yellow, with a thin red line, starter relay, passes thru a starter lock-out switch connected to the shift linkage in the control box, shifter must be in Neutral.
