My 84 18' century with merc 140 would die above idle in the water, I rebuilt the 2 bbl mercarb the problem I found was in the accel pump.
About 1/4 inch of gunk above the screen and ball check. Originally I didnt think this was the problem because when you pushed the throttle two streams came out to feed into the barrels.
Now that I have rebuilt carb I know that a healthy stream means it shoots straight across
the barrels, If there is any drop to the stream it is not working right.
I can't imagine how a stored boat that was properly winterized, only has 50 hours on it can build up that much residue on the side of the screen opposite the fuel supply.
My question is regarding the flared fuel line fitting that ties into the filter nut. Does this fitting have a gasket? When I first reassembled I thought my float wasn't right but it turned out to be leaking at the fitting. It took quite a
bit of force to seal off the flow by tightening the fuel line fitting. It still isnt leaking after several hours of hard running but this doesnt seem right.
Regards BDC

there is a aluminum gasket on the filter fitting to the carb but not at the flare. be sure to hold the filter fitting with 1in wrench after it is tight. so when tightening the 5/8 fuel line you do not strip the threads out of carb.
