'84 Mercury Black Max - I can't get the lower back on. Help!

Well, Wired247 was right. It would have been easier to put the lower on first.
My powerhead is bolted to the mid section which is mounted to the back of the boat.

I've got a lower that I cannot get back on.

I was able to work it all the way to where the water pump touches the mid section.
The water pipe is aligned and I'm past that.
I'm thinking I can't get the drive shaft into the hole in the bottom of the powerhead.

How can I get this lower back on?

While putting upward pressure on the lower unit have someone slowly turn the flywheel. It won't take much. Sometimes when working on them the splines don't match up perfectly and keeps the LU from going all the way up.
