Hi All,

I need to ask some feedback on an '84 OMC 140hp motor and outdrive. I had the 77 stringer for quite some time and looking to upgrade the most affordable way. The outdrive is silver in color and it is not the cobra series. Is this still considered a Stringer? Reliability issues from owners would help.

Thanks

Post a pictuer, seen way to many white Volvo drives painted Mercruiser black to tell you what an OMC silver drive is. Probably the color the previous owner liked.

Mid 1984, OMC switched from white to silver outdrives. Some engines were still the old blue, some engines silver.
In 1985, all the engines and drives were painted silver.

OMC is not a good bet.Even cheap deals are not recomended.
Poor quality.Basically junk.
They went out of business and parts are hard to find and people willing to work on them is harder.
Some people are very loyal but will eventually go to something else.J

Yes, that's a 400 series stringer. The 800 series was used with 6's and V8's

My '84 OMC was installed in the boat in February, '84 and was silver.

Not so. The quality is fine. Machining, design, fit and finish is as good as Merc, (I've had, and worked on both)

With reasonable maintenance, they last for years. Mine was 24 years old when i changed it for a Merc gen2, not b/c it failed, I just wanted something newer.

Besides the tilt motor issues, the constant water in the upper box, the goofy steering, the goofy trim system, parent company no longer in business, basically FINE drives! Oh, did I mention the goofy shift quadrant?
