My buddy just bought an 84 deck boat with an OMC 5.7 I/O. The motor has blowby. Additionally, he took it out the other day and it got hot. 260ish hot. Water pump in the lower unit went out, he said. What is his best route to try and get it going for the summer, and then rebuild this fall? He is willing to do the rebuild if thats the way to go. Or should he get a rebuilt motor? If so, where is the best source to get the parts? Any general opinions of the process from those more experienced would be great.

Engine is trashed, need to replace impeller.
Read old threads in here, while looking at a oem manual, will be the best bet.

What does a complete rebuild of this motor entail? Where is the best place to get a complete rebuild kit for this motor? What kind of machine shop work should he expect? I tried to talk him out of buying the boat, as it needs a lot of work. The floor is weak as well as having the engine problems. He says he can fix it all, but I am afraid he is going to have too much in it when all is said and done. Anybody care to venture a guess as to how much he will have tied up in parts when he is done.

Thats about what I figured. He says the outdrive is fine. What about rebuild kits if he chooses to go that route instead of a reman engine?

A reman from Jasper has a 18 month warranty, and it is not a rebuild.
There are other remans, but can't remember the names.

He is talking about trying to rebuild it himself. I am trying to locate a complete rebuild kit for marine engines with no luck. Should you just use regular automotive rebuild kits?

Yeah, you could. But buy a warranty engine- cheaper in the long run.

Sure but there will be a few differences. Head gaskets, core plugs and cam to name a few. When chosing the Cam, think high torque/low rpm and never get one with an LSA over 112deg.
