Removed upper and done the pressure test again, and it holds 12 psi for ever, yet when I top it up and run it on the muffs i see oil film on water output and no oil shows on the stick. Is it possible that the upper builds up pressure and forces excess gear oil out the bottom oil seal until it reaches a happy pressure where the gear oil wont push out? I fill it up to the stick mark and maybe a little more for good measure. Its say 16.6 ounces is this correct? When I drained it to do the pressure test I got about a coffee cup of oil, after 10 min. of muff run.

Definately need input her guys. Want to go boating this weekend.

I'm not following how you do a pressure test on a removed upper as the top cover of the exhaust housing is part of the sealed oil compartment when the drive is assembled.

Clamped the top housing cover down with my big clamps and tested, sure enough my oil seal was leaking, I put seals in first then the main shaft down through the seals, even being carefull i managed to push the lip of gear oil seal down about 3/8 of the lip. bought new seals and installed them after the upper drive shaft was in place. So success had her running for 2 hours and gear oil perfect. Live and learn.
Im a happy camper knowing I completely overhauled my stringer and now ready for boating season. Knock on wood though !
