84 yam 15 hp lower unit

I just finished my water pump rebuild, it was interesting to say the least. Not too hard, but woodruff key was stuck pretty hard. NOW - What is the trick to remounting the lower unit, I'm having trouble lining up the splines or something. It just won't go in...

Thanks anyway guys, I removed the motor from the boat, turned it over, lower unit went right in without any trouble.
