'85 1150 rebuild...

My engine has a dead #4 cylinder, no compression but the piston is moving up and down. I got a quote from a mechanic, who has 40 years experience, $400.00 labor plus $187.00 in parts. He suggested that since he was going to have the engine apart that i should go ahead and re-ring the rest of the cylinders. Is there anything else that i should have him check and is this a good price to do this.

Also, my prop (3 fin aluminum, i don't know the pitch or anything else about it) has a huge chuck missing from it. my boat is a 17' fiberglass Alsberg 1977. What prop should i replace it with?

Thanks for any help as I am new to boating. My brother in law gave me this boat because he has alzheimers disease and my sister is afraid of him being on the water by himself. This boat will be saltwater most of the time. Again thanks for any and all help.

Need to find out why #4 died, likely a ignition problem or mechanical failure. I would rering the rest while apart but highly suggest you check cylinders for out of round before doing soas you may need to bore it. Parts $$ sound cheap but labor is a deal!!!

If you are going to do it, do it right! Hone all 6, replace all rings, gaskets and seals. Replace the pump impeller, rebuild the carbs and fuel pump and replace all the hoses if they are original.
Remove the air jet from the carb float bowls and throw it away. Remove any timing advance modules if equipped.
I can see where he is coming from with the cost but it is a bare bones job at best. Better to check all aspects of the engine not just throw something together. Keep in mind you get what you pay for and sometimes less.

The 1985 115 was a different engine then a 1977 1150. Does it have a distributor? JR

no distributors. took boat to mechanic on saturday. i hope he sticks to the 400.00 for labor.
