My 1995 140hp evinrude is leaking out of the front of the unit a little and also when pump is engaged it pushes fluid up into the electric motor. the local shop price to rebuild is fairly expensive but I figured it is mostly O rings and the like and that their cost is mostly labor. Is this a project a lay person should attempt? it appears that a spanner type wrench is needed are there other interior parts that will need a specialty tool?

You may find that all you need is a few orings and some wipers. Depends on where the leak is. You can purchase a spanner wrench at a local auto parts store. Bombardier makes an oring kit for that trim unit. Ask your local dealer about part number: 393942. Under $ 35.

Not a hugely difficult job by any means. As with anything, take your time with it the first time and next thing you will be helping the neighbors out with theirs.:)
