I'm 57 and not a mechanic. I can only go 5mph max in a 14' Smoker craft. While in idle, I can pull the spark plug wire from the bottom and it runs the same. My bottom cylinder is not firing. I swapped the sp wires by only disconnecting them from the spark plugs, then swapping. I was hoping the bottom would fire, but the best result I could get was like a spit of an ignition.

I want to swap the wires outright, but it looks like the wires are hard wired to the ignition coils, so I'm apprehensive about pulling too hard. There is NO boot on the coil end.

I've read Leroy's Ramblings multiple times, searched the internet, and watched numerous videos.

Does anyone know if I can pull them off without ruining a "possibly" good coil?

FWIW the motor runs great on 1 cylinder aside from little power. It trolls great! I can start it cold in 2-3 pulls.

Of course the coils can be swapped out !-----Just takes switching input wires from CDI unit to coils.

Have you tried swapping the spark plugs? Probably not what's causing the problem but it only takes a minute to try.

Yes, I've swapped spark plugs. I appreciate the replies. I'm going to order one new coil. Even if it's the power pack or something else, I'll have a backup coil if that's not the issue. Next will be a power pack. After that I'll take it in. :)

If the plug wire does not have a boot at the coil end, then it isn't a 1985. How about posting your model #. Sounds like a 1974-76 with points.

Don't think oem ignition coils are readily available, but aftermarket ones in the $30 to $40 range are out there (check here at iBoats). I would be inclined to just replace them both. You can test them with a multi tester (resistance test on secondary wires). Resistance scale at 1K, should find 5 or 6K from spring clip in boot to the mag plate.

Looks like there is an attempt to work on the t.stat. It's easier to take off the the head and work on the t.stat on the work bench (lower bolts aren't fully removed until the head is lifted up and out).
