85 25 merc wont stay in fwd

my 85 25h.p. mrc 2 stroke wont engage in forward to well. its a tiller steer when you shift to fwd it turns but ratchets, if i hold down on the shift linkage it will go all the way into fwd. dogs don't look too bad and we refaced them. no free play on prop. if the shift linkage were a little longer do you think that would help, or do you think i might have bigger problems. thanks

i would be looking at your shift cable adustment first of all on the motor. would say the problem may lie there and if not your gear selector down in the gear box could be warn.
