85 3.0 140 mercruiser noise in gear

I just bought this boat and took it out for the first time last weekend and these are the problems that occurred to me. The motor sounds fine in neutral, but when I put it in gear it sounds like the brakes on a car going bad. It is like a grinding noise that isn't constant. To me it sounds like a bearing going out. It's almost like a vibration that comes and goes while driving. The propeller has a small chunk knocked off of it. Could it be off balanced and causing a vibration? I have another prop that I have yet to put on, could this be the problem? If not any other suggestions?

Do NOT run it again untill you find the problem.
Pull the prop off and make sure the thrust washer is in front of the prop. If not, the prop will grind down the lower housing and it will have to be replaced.
While there, drain the gear lube and check for metal on the plug.
