my motor is about '85-'87 evinrude 90 hp that is running strong on a 16' astroglass. Well I finished finished fishing the other day and tilted the motor all the way up and drove it home without the stern saver. I was hitching up the boat and went to lower the tilt to put the stern saver and it wouldnt go down. The hydraulic motor is running when i push down but not retracting and when i push up it the hydrualic motor is running and making a maxed out sound.

Did i overlift the hydraulic and get it stuck? Well first i tried to add more fluid to see if it would build preasure, and nothing happened. Then i pulled the top line going to the cylinder and learned this one pushed the fluid in. Then i pulled the bottom hose and pushed down on the motor and all the fluid came gushing out. Now my motor was almost down but I couldnt figure out how to lower the smaller hydraulics which trimms the motor. This got me on the water but at just idle speed because the boat wouldnt plain out.

I added fluid here

Removed this top line going to cylinder, pushed fluid in

Removed this line from under and pushed motor and cylinder retracted

Also removed this plug but not sure what this one is for

the fluid fill is the first plug you took out.thats the only part you need to mess with.Get some trim and tilt fluid and fill to it flows out the fill hole.Put plug back in .operate a few times and refill till it takes no more. There is a manual release valve for reasons like you had.Look for a slotted screw that is in a hole that is in the mounting bracket. loosen it a turn ,it WILL nOT COME OUT,it is designed to only open ,then stop so you wont drop it in the water.Once loose ,you can manually lift the motor or put it down.IT WILL NOT go all the way ,the trim will not allow it further. You need the TNT motor to operate the trim rams.

Thanks mikesea. Wish i new about the release, but im learning something new about this motor everyday. Its a strong running motor. Once this is fixed im going to fix the head seal which seems to be a bit worn and leaking a little.

This mourning I pulled the whole TnT off to reattach the top hydraulic line; its just to hard to work in the small space and line up that hydraulic line perfectly.

Mikesea you said "IT WILL NOT go all the way ,the trim will not allow it further. You need the TNT motor to operate the trim rams." Yes i agree with you. The TnT motor is running fine why wont the trim lower if the tilt has been drained. "The trim is electric or hydraulic operated? Does the tilt have to be operating for the trim to work?"

Thanks ill be posting pics after I get a little further along.

Your system has a single hydraulic pump that uses fluid from a single reservoir. If you lose fluid or pressure from either tilt or trim it can affect the operation of the other. Trim is actually the same circuit as tilt. Tilt always goes down first because the weight of the engine is pushing on it. You can not easily isolate tilt from trim. If you put a pinhole in your trim piston then tilt will bleed down. That is because the "tilt" fluid will backfeed through the system and find the pinhole in trim.

As regard your system ... it sounds like over extension. You should not have needed to push down on engine after you removed the looper tube. Gravity should have pulled it down. Since your description sounds like you had to push on it ... then the most likely suspect is a jammed tilt piston caused by over-extension combined with a worn tilt head. Tilt head wear is normal. I would expect that once you get it back together everything will be fine until your next over-extension.

Yesterday i tryed to run as much of the water out of the lines and cylinder as possible by running the motor and pushing hydraulic fluid through. Then plugged everything back up and added fluid but not creating preasure. am i supposed to have the manual release open or shut when i run the motor. what is the proper way to refill the hydraulics?
