Hi everyone, First post here but have been reading for a long time. Finally have a boat that runs and since its my first was a little concerned about fuel leakage. I'm not really sure if this is from trimming the motor up to move the boat or its a leak. IMG_1130.jpg You can see the thin layer of fuel here.

IMG_1129.jpg This one shows outside where there seems to be a build up of oil and dirt.
just want to see if this is normal or could be a problem.
Thanks for any help.

First place I would check...Those 70s spit lots of fuel into the air box at idle speed. There is a drain hose bib at the bottom of the box for a return line to the engine to capture the excess. Otherwise it goes into the bottom of the box and eventualy drains down where you see it. Some spit full gets by the gasket on mine and does the same thing. No harm just messy and smells. Other places to look are the hose connections at carbs, fuel pump and electric primer assy. Mine leaked once at the elec primer assy where one of the hose bibs cracked. I drilled it out and installed a screw in metal hose bib from a model airplane engine. That was 4-5 yrs and its still going. If none of the above check the carb drain plugs for tightness before going further.

Thanks for the info Bill. Will look into those areas. Have some running issues with bogging out when giving throttle. Its not a regular thing but want to check fuel system. I have been doing a lot of trolling and I heard that is not good for the larger motors.

For what its worth, my 70 (actually a 65 commercial based on the domestic 70 - basically a 70 with low compression head to utilize ultra low octane fuel) trolls at idle for hrs at a time without much fuss when throttling up. Thats in the summer down here in Florida. Winter is a few degrees cooler and will cause a little sneezing on take off if idled like in summer.
