Hi,

I just bought a 85 capri bayliner.
Not being use to running a boat with throttle,Im wondering the throttle positions.

Straight up is?
As you bring it twards you, where is neutral?
Is it all the way pulled back twards you, where it is level(horizontal)or is that reverse?

Im thinking straight up is neutral, and as you push it foreward, that is the speed correct?

Just wondering as im gonna get a battery for it today, and wanted a little knowledge of position to start it without the prop engaged, and the neutral starting position.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Scotty

correct, straight up is neutral. You MUST have water to the engine before you start it...either a set of muffs or a large bin full of water or you will destroy your water pump.

Thanks,

Is it possible just to start it and shut it off real quick?

Or I guess i have a 55 barell drum i could fill with water and try it like that.

Muffs are cheap. The throttle lever should have a locking device (click) at neutral. Will have to be disingaged to shift forward or reverse.

That makes sense.
Ya it locks into neutral, and then as i move it backwards,it has other locks too..A couple mabe.
So reverse I take it.

If you pull back without disengaging the lock (click) and find other lock (clicks), Something is amiss. My release is a trigger under the part where you rest your hand. Suggest a manual to disassemble the throttle lever and make repairs. Sometimes a loose nut is all it is.

only if you want to destroy your impeller....happens VERY fast with no water....use the 55 gal drum
