I have taken ownership of a '83 15ft Bayliner Capri w/ a 85hp Force. It is in excellent shape, prob less than 20 hrs on both boat and motor. It ran very well before my uncle had lost the key and stored it some 17 years ago. How much work will it take to restore it?

Welcome to iboats.

Please post the motor model and serial number so we can give specific instructions.

If the boat has been kept dry, you are in good shape.
If it has gotten wet inside, you need to check the transom and hull stringers for rotten wood.
Also check the floor for soft/rotten wood.
Inspect all wiring for corrosion and rodent damage.

You can get a new key from a Mercury dealer, $3.

For the motor:
1 buy a repair manual
2 remove sparkplugs and squirt/spray some tcw3 outboard oil and some Seafoam Deep Creep into the cylinders to lubricate and loosen them up.
3 do a compression check to see if the motor is salvagable

If the engine has good compression (100psi or more) then:

Rebuild the carburators.
Replace all fuel lines, from the tank to the carbs.
Rebuild the fuel pump.
Replace the waterpump and impeller.
Drain and refill the lower unit lube.
Replace the gas tank if there is any crud or dirt in it.
If it is clean, flush it out and fill with fresh gas and the proper amount of tcw3 2 cycle oil.
Buy new sparkplugs.

Ok, now you have spent $175, and you are ready to give it a shot.

Install battery.
Check for spark.
Put motor in suitable tank of water.
Hook up fuel line and proceed with starting procedure.

Keep us udated on your progress and ask any questions you need answered.

Good Luck, sounds like you found one that is worth a little effort to save.

Should be a manufacturer id plate on the motor.
USMarine put them on the transom mount bracket. ( 84-89)

Chrysler put them inside the cowl, under the carb. ( 1970-1983)

If fuel lines are in good shape, with no cracking or air leaks, you may be ok, for awhile.

I would still do the fuel pump and carbs though.

The gas line from the tank to the motor has the bulb in it, those also tend to fail over time.

Ok, so ive found out the motor is a '83 from a piece of paper from the dealership. Hope it's right, because I went ahead and ordered the manual. What is the cowl? Is there anything i will have to remove to see the serial number?

Cowl = engine cover, top and bottom

Should be in the bottom cowl, under or near the carb.

Ok, the model # is 856X3l the serial # is 1748. I have started looking at the carbs and fuel pump, the manual says that I should buy kits containing gaskets ect.. Is that a must have for this project?
