My idle problem is as old as the moter; I start it, and a few seconds later it will die (just about the time I get it into Forward). Recently, it has also become extremely hard to start.

This old boat might sit for a couple years at a time. To resurrect it, I throw in plugs, lower end oil, and a water pump, top off the tank and go. I try to burn up all that old gas before refueling, and let the carbs run dry before parking it.

Questions: Any suggestions? If I were to "purge" or clean the fuel system, what steps are necessary? Are there any likely parts to replace (fuel pump, etc)? Do fuel lines suck air after they get old and hard? And just what the heck do I do with all that nasty mixed gas?

Thanks for any help

schmit,

Of course there's the usual: Fuel, fuel line(s), carb, .... BUT,...
Before you through un-necessary cash at it, you might want to check the compression.
I have two frinds with Chryslers and a Merc myself that exhibited these very symptoms upon "dropping" a cylinder. Could be rings, head gasket, etc (maybe cheap & easy or perhaps a bit more).
But, if this is the problem (easy to find with compression tester) and you are not going to pursue repair, don't waste your time on gas line, bulb carb, etc.

GOOD LUCK (to us all)
