Hello, been working on the motor now 85 HP Force, bout a 1984 model. Have the LU off, and need to put the Shift linkage back in. How the hell do you do this without the saddle falling off constantly? I need steps if possible. Using heavy grease and once I slip it past the prop rod in forward and lift up the saddle constantly falls off. About 100 times now in 100 degree weather, not fun.

Also I broke a bolt in removing the LU one of the 6 (left side last one near exhaust snout) and when I removed the LU I noticed there was no 7th bolt installed under the exhaust. Tried to remove the snapped bolt, but the extractor also snapped off. It is really stuck bad. Anyhow is it ok to use the 5 bolts and then also put in the 7th bolt that was originally missing without any repercussions. Thanks in advance!!

There was a thread a few months ago "I think" that showed how to do this with sewing thread. Once he had it in place, he just tugged the thread hard, it broke, and he pulled it out. It seemed pretty darn smart to me.

The link you need is by Boblist, and has "...slick trick..." in the thread title. A search should bring it up. I used it successfully about 3 weeks ago. Took 3 tries and about 45 minutes.

on the bolts...there's always the "oh hell, carry on" option. just try it with 6 bolts and see. If the LU falls off and sinks to the bottom of the lake...then you know you needed that last bolt. :/

Hey guys, for this shift rod in the 85 HP Force, How the hell does it go in? I'm afraid I'm trying to do it wrong since I just can't get it aligned. tried the thread trick. Works by keeping the saddle on, but thats it, just not dumping the LU over to get the saddle out the bottom constantly. Can someone give me some steps please!! Does the saddle sit up as a U or upside down? Thanks again guys.

per manual:1)Install shift arm coupling, O-ring and pin. 2) Remove reverse gear assembly from prop shaft. 3) Install prop shaft w/proper thrust washer so that shift yoke engages arms of coupling. 4) install reverse gear assembly-seating bearing spool so grooves grooves in housing are fully exposed. 5)Install retaining rings in groove. 6) Install prop shaft spool.

I have almost the entire LU together, drive shaft, prop and gears still on. Just took off the plate to see into the cavity where the prop shaft? (has a groove on it) Just trying to get the shift rod / linkage/ yoke back on and wondering how so that I can put back in the pivot pin, back on the plates and impeller and reinstall the LU, then go boating. Thanks Again!

Just trying to help. Sounds like you missed a step on reassembly. Might have to backtrack.

Re: 85 HP Force - Lower Unit Inquiries

Alright I have got the shift linkage in and the plate and water pump back in place. Time to reinstall the LU. I have this rubber seal or collar with a beveled end and a steel collar with a groove. Does the steel collar go on then the rubber seal sits in it beveled end up? And then just go for it in putting the LU back on? Do i need the shift rod in any special gear? or just line up the splines and water tube and bolt on?

DUDE, a manual, let me say again, a manual will save you a lot of heartache. $90 will get you an OEM manual and parts list. By the way that's less than one hr. of marine mechanics time.
