I have an 85 HP Force, Model 856X8A and the right actuator of the tilt & trim is leaking. The fluid is coming from the top seal near the shaft of the actuator. The only place in town that services Force engines is telling me that the entire tilt & trim assy. has to be replaced as this model isn't rebuildable and they want to charge me $1186.70 + labor to repair it. This doesn't seem right, do I just need either another actuator or a seal kit? Is there such a thing? HELP!! I have no idea if this is true or not and am not familiar with boat engine repair. Please,..someone say it isn't so!

Hallk-

Go to www.dougrussell.com . They sell parts like seals and o-rings to service what you need or the whole tilt cylinder (about $180). They even have schematics of most parts for your engine. Read their internet ordering policy first before you order. Their minimum order is 30$, so if you buy a $2 o-ring, it will cost you $30. Hope this helps.

Re: 85 HP Force Tilt & Trim

hallk,

I have a 1977 75 hp Evinrude that had an aftermarket tilt/trim kit added. I had the same problem you are having. The system worked fine, but fluid was leaking out of the tops of the cylinders. Since I had no info on the t/t kit, I unscrewed the caps of the cylinders and removed the two orings seated in the caps. I went down to a local machine shop and purchased new rings for about $2. Worked great. The caps were a little hard to get off. I used a punch (set at and angle in the holes on top of the caps) and a hammer to unscrew them which worked pretty well. Use petroleum jelly to lub up the orings before reinstalling.

Good luck!
