Hi there! I'm new to the forum and hoping one of you can help me. Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply. So i have a 89 85hp force that i'm putting on my 69 lund. I know it's not the best motor but it was free and it runs good. When i got it it was on a 89 bayliner capri. The motor was up when i got it and after I found the bad wiring and bypassed the kill switch I got power to the trim. It went down but not up. I took the motor and wiring harness off so i could work on it inside. I hooked everything back up the way it came off except i ran a lead from the fuse block to my toggle and same issue so i went and got 2 new relays and put them on and as soon as i toggle either way i blow a fuse. So this is what I've figured out so far with my new relay on the port side and the old one on starboard side green wire trims up and blue wire blows the fuse so i switched the leads and blue trims up while green blows the fuse. Then I switched the relays so my new one is starboard side and the old one is port side with leads hooked up correctly and the blue wire trims down and green blows the fuse, switch the leads and green trims down while blue blows the fuse both new relays and i blow a fuse either way i toggle. What am i missing? Help please!

Welcome to iboats.

Not an expert on these units, but this motor should have solenoids, not relays.

Could a previous owner have replaced the wiring harness with a newer version?

Are there 2, or 3 wires going to the motor?

Photos of the harness, relays, motor, would be valuable here.

If you make a few more posts, you will then have "permissions" to post photos to the forum.

Also, a moderator will probably move this thread to the Force repair forum. Not to worry, this site is hard to navigate sometimes.

Thanks for the replies. I think all of the wiring is original. Yes it does have a solenoid the relays power right off of it and the grounds from the relays go straight to the engine block. The trim motor only has 2 wires green and blue. I'll get some pics to post today.

Maybe switch this over to the force forum and get more results. There are some people who live, breath and love their forces on the forum and can help a lot

Welcome to iBoats! :welcome:

The kill switch should have nothing to do with the T&T system. The kill switch grounds out the magento, disabling the ignition. This indicates it's not wired properly. The T&T gets power directly from the battery terminal on the starter solenoid.

Always add the serial or model# if known??
The 89 85 Force has relays not solenoids.
The Blue is up and the Green is down.

The original wiring came with a circuit breaker.
I believe it's a 25a breaker.

You have a 3 part Trim and Tilt system.
1 electric motor drives a
2 hydraulic pump that drives the
3 trim/tilt cylinders.

The top of the electric motor, inside the wiring can break loose and short out causing the problem when only one way works.

You have the 2 or 3 wire system?(how many wires to the top of the electric motor?)
It should be a 2 wire.

Thank you mod! Thanks for helping Jerry. Serial number is 856X9F. Yes i have 2 relays and yes there is a circuit breaker. Yes it is two wires going into the motor blue and green. I'm still trying to figure out how to load my pics here. Did get them to an album though.

Take the electric motor apart.
The top has brushes and a points set.(why do they call it POINTS when it really only 1 point set???) :)

See if the wires at the point have broken, or wore through and shorting somewhere??
