85 hp merc

K here it goes, stupid question. I got a merc 85 hp on the boat i traded, not sure of the year older 2 stroke with 2 carbs. It idles fine but once put in gear it dies sometimes, runs great top end. So i went to pull the carbs to clean and noticed that the top carb screw right to the left of the opening was just sitting there. I turned both in all the way and then 1 1/2 turns out. Have not hit the water yet but thinking that could be my main prob. Any thought's on this? Thanks new to all this boat stuff. Thanks for reading.

Well that could be a problem...that and dirty carbs....

Ty , yeah took it out on water,seems to idle a little high now but ran pretty good, a couple times fell on its face, was going to try the lync and sync thing but i think i will wait till i get a manuel,
