I am original owner of 1988 1700 Capri with 85 HP Force. It did not have power trim & tilt. I lived with it for 23 years. Well last month I saw a trim and tilt unit on ebay, off a 1989 85Hp force. Unit came still connected to the transom brackets, motor cover, swivel, etc. It included the trim ram, tilt cylinder, hydraulic lines, motor, and wiring harness (including relays). It is a 2-wire motor. Unit was clean, fresh water use only. Got it for $150 with shipping. Upon arrival, motor worked and trim and tilt went up & down.
So far so good.
Took a while to get it apart as the shafts were pretty well sized to the transom brackets. Lot of heat, Kroil, and beating to get them out. I never would have been able to get this apart if it were mounted on a boat. After getting everything apart I needed a few parts including: 4 Nylock nuts for both shafts both ends, DPDT momentary contact switch (in dash), circuit breaker (was not included), 3 bolts for motor, and 2 new shock bushings for tilt ram. It went in pretty good. Unit had ATF in it when I got it. I drained everything and went back to spec oil, straight 20W oil (Loews). Once installed it worked but switch operation was erratic at times. I figured it was the 20 year old relays, and the fact that they had not been used in a while. I ordered two new relays. That solved that problem. It works great. No leaks. Does not bleed down in any position.
To prevent shafts from seizing up with transom brackets, I intend to pull shafts annually, clean and lube with a never sieze grease.
Have not tried it in the water yet. Knock on wood, so far so good. Total cost $240.
Thanks to all the relavent posts in this forum. They were extremely helpful in working through this.
