Hi,

Model# j140tlcos.

Im wondering if someone can explain the controls i have attached in the picture. Obviously the big arm lever is for forward and reverse. But what is the starting procedure? It looks like the lever on the top side of the box may be the choke?

As for testing it with the muffs on in the driveway. I hooked up the muffs, i cant seem to get them to seal 100% on the sides of the lower. And does the telltale only work when the engine is running? I didnt get any water from the telltale during cranking(comp test) nor just sitting still.

Finally, the boat has a built in gas tank. Its a 1985 Doral 164. 16.5 ft long. Tank specs are worn off the top of the tank. Does anyone have any guesses what its capacity is? The guage says its about 1/4 full. And its all bad gas. So im just trying trying to figure out what to do with all that gas and how many gas cans i need in order to remove it from the boat.

Top lever on the control is fast idle. If it's an '85, there's a primer that's operated when you press the ignition key inward while you crank the motor. Procedure:

1) Attach fuel line and pump bulb until firm
2) Lift fast idle lever fully
3) Crank while pressing inward on key
4) Release key and adjust fast idle as needed. May need to press the key inward to prime it a few times while it's warming up.

Muffs won't seal and it doesn't matter if water is squirting out around the leg as long as it's getting into the inlet holes.

Don't over rev the motor on muffs or in neutral on the water for that matter.

Does this one have VRO? And is it connected/working?

Follow on questions as it would seem this is a "new to you" rig. Do you know when the water pump was last changed? If not, replacement is cheap insurance against failure.

The lever that rests flush on the top of the control box, is the warm up idle speed lever. The choke/enrichment system is activated by pushing the key inward while cranking. Starting procedure: Cold engine; Ensure engine is in Neutral, raise idle speed lever, turn key to start while pressing key into control box: Warm engine; usually just turning the key is enough.
Cranking the engine is usually too brief to fill the engine block with water for the telltale to be of use, This will occur when the engine is running and can flow enough water.
Fuel capacity? between 90 liters and 120 liters. 4.54 liters/Imp gal equals approx 20 - 26 gal, or 24 - 31 US gal

Thanks guys. That makes much more sense than what I had originally thought.

VRO has been removed and it now runs on mixed gas. I haven't changed the water pump yet, but plan to before running it for anything longer than 2-3 minutes. I don't want to sink to much money into this motor until I know for sure that its still good. Previous owner claimed there was a problem with the starboard lower cylinder but I've yet to find anything wrong with it. So I'm going to driveway test it a bit until I'm confident that its good to go. Do you happen to know the part number for the water pump? And is it just the impeller and gaskets that get changed or the whole housing?

I dont know what im going to do with all that bad gas. Going to have to call our local waste disposal and see if I can take it there I guess.

Search here on iBoats for your water pump - just need your model number. Likely just need an impeller unless it's been run in silty/sandy conditions that would cause the stainless parts to wear down.

No idea what to do with bad gas, but I gave some away to a company that was going to use it to clean parts. Doesn't seem like a very good idea to me, but he took it away for free. Try craigslist/kijiji and see if anybody bites.
