Re: 85 Johnson Javalin coughing

It is common for the engine to have a "lean sneeze" when first started each day and the engine is cold. Once the engine reaches normal operating temps, the sneezing should go away. If yours still does this, it is an indication that the engine is running lean and that one or more of the small idle passageways in the upper carb body may have some dried fuel restricting the flow somewhat. Carb overhauls may be needed.

Well thank you, do I need to take this in or maybe if I run some carb cleaner through it?

Running carb cleaner through the carbs usually won't clear a restriction in the actual passageway. I'd take the carbs apart to clean them.

Re: 85 Johnson Javalin coughing

My 82 50hp was coughing on 1 carb only. Turned out to be dirty reed valves. After help from this forum, I cleaned them and problem is gone. Mine don't cough at all now even when cold. Done it by myself in about an hour total start to finish. Remove carb cover (plastic) if you have one, and see if you can isolate it to one carb. Just a thought. :)
