First of all, I'd like to thank all the experts that reply to us non-mechanical types. One quick question...Before I rebuilt the carbs (1977 85hp Johnson), which the jets were clogged, the boat would start up but just run bad. Now that the carbs are rebuilt, the engine will not start unless I shoot it with some starting fluid. After that, it starts right up and runs very well. I can let it sit for about 10 min, and it starts right up. After it sits without being started for about an hour, I have to spray it again. Do you think that after I run it for a while and get it broken back in (it has been sitting for a few years) that this problem will go away? Anyone know why?

Are you using the choke when cranking? Using ether to start is not good (no oil); I would suggest spraying premix in the carb throat.

Yes I am using the choke. The only problem with using a mix in a spray bottle is that I have to take the cover off the front of the carb, which is a pain...with the ether I just sray it in a side hole. Would a spray mix work the same way through the hole in the side of the cover? do you know why it will not start without the spray?

I'd strongly suggest that you remove that carburetor face plate, then check the operation of the electric choke. Your description of the problem, as WildeOne first suggested, would indicate to me that it is not operating properly.

Look at the choke operation. Make sure the solenoid works.

If the solenoid is pulling the plunger down make sure the butterflies are closing. Completely.

If the butterflies are not moving, make sure the lever is not in the "Manual Off" position. It should be in the middle position marked "Automatic".

If the buttreflies are moving but not closing completely find out why. Plunger bottoming out in the solenoid before they close? Silencer base gasket sticking out and stopping them?

You can run that motor without the silencer cover on. Its most likely right there in the choke butterfly area. Youll find it.

I had the faceplate off when I was running it yesterday. We tried starting it using the electric choke and manual choke. The butterflys were closing properly. Not sure whether it was closing fully, but it sure did look like it was. I never put my hand on the butterfly to see if it was closed completely. I will check it out this afternoon. Thanks.
