85 lower unit with preload fit 88 without

I have a 1988 XR4 150hp with the small gearcase lower unit. I bought a 1985 lower unit from a 150hp with the large gearcase but it has the preload pin. Anyone know if it will work on my XR4, or if I need to remove the preload pin, or if it will not fit? Looks the same, and both are for 20" shaft. Not sure if spline teeth are the same. 1985 is a 2 to 1 gear ratio. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate some advice.

Yes it willl bolt up but you will have to play with props as the Xr4 was a 1.78 ratio

Understood and thanks for getting back. Large hub 85 is 2 to 1 so I'll use a bigger prop with more pitch (Like 15 x 19) than the 88 small hub with 1.78 to 1. (13 x 16) Mostly needed to know if it would bolt up as is. Your answer is good news. I appreciate the help. Do you think I should remove the preload pin or just leave it?
