85 Merc on 21ft Lund Baron

I have a 1988 21ft Lund Baron and ahve just come into a 1977 85 Merc outboard. Is this motor big enough to push the boat fast enough to plane it out? I know we wouldn't be the fastest boat on the lake but i can't upgrade to bigger right now either.

What is max HP on that boat? I would think the 85HP motor would be able to plane it with the correct prop. What pitch prop do you have?

It should be able to jump onto plane well with a reasonable load in the rig. With 4 or more people it may be slow to plane but trimming the motor can help with that.

If you already have the Merc and the boat I'd give her a whirl and see how she does.

I tend to disagree.

What's the max hp rating on the plate? I'd look to get at least 70-75% of that max hp if you want to have a not so frustrrating experience.

Ex: on a 90hp max rated boat get a 75hp, on a 150hp max rated get a 115hp and so on...

A Baron is a pretty big hull (2475lbs dry, with gears, fuel and peoples it's way over 3000lbs) and it's probably rated at around 200hp max so a 135-150hp would be the minimum.

It would be the death of that motor If its a old 4 cylinder 850 it dont put out but 75 hp at prop...

I believe you boat is rated for 75-235 hp. I would guess that it won't get up on plane and you'd have to run severely under pitched at the prop to keep from overloading the engine. It would work but it wouldn't be a pleasure to ride around in.

I imagine it will plane but you will have a slow boat that will require WOT to keep it on plane
