85 Merc...wont start me up

I have a 85 Mercury OB 60hp. Tried starting today and the starter just spins, will not engage with the flywheel to start. Im new at boating and was not sure if this could be fixed with a new starter, or if there was something else preventing it from engaging. Any help would be huge. Thanks!

try lubing the shaft and make sure the battery has enough juice to turn it over. starters can be replaced, but can usually be cleaned/lubed and put back into service with a bit o luck.

Also, make sure all electrical connections are clean AND tight. Check both (+) and (-) connections. Failure of the starter to engage the ring gear on the flywheel is usually due to low voltage at the starter. Solenoid or key switch may also be at fault. If cleaning up the terminations doesn't help, try by-passing the solenoid by jumpering from battery (+) to the big (+) post on the starter motor. If it causes the starter to correctly engage, the solenoid is probably bad.
