Sharkcat

Thanx, and yes it is the same..
But so far I have 2 1978's 3 1985's 1 1979.
Funny enough, the 2 people who have said 1985 are the mechanics who serviced and replaced parts like switchbox, impellor, rectifier etc.
Aust codes are different (so the Clymo manual says) to USA so the machinshopen site is not relevent, and I figure the best way is to see what was made in 1978 an 1985 and obviously there would have to be some visual differences.
I don't really care what year, but it will help when looking for parts.

To clarify the year of your engine Mercury made red band engines to 1974 & then blueband to 1982.
The serial no.corresponds to 1978.I have asked 3 different parts gurus they all came up with the same answer.
I once had a mechanic & a salesman trying to tell me that the red band 65hp 4 cyl. on my old boat was made in 1979!!!!it was 1971.
Thanx Sharkcat

I wouldve thought there would have been something a bit more surefire such as the "Wrapper" type cowling (Last year made) and where the Brownband 50 with a serial no starting with 9 (Belgian made) fits in.
Saw one today, the guy claims it's a {"late 80's) but looks like mine with a brown band
There are also different blue bands ie light/dark and blue/silver.
The serial nos start with .. USA 5*+6* Canada 7* Aust 8* and Europe 9*
