85 mercruiser 470 gimble or u joint?

I have a 85 Baretta with a 470 4 cylinder . Love the boat just did a alternator conversion and was running great. But!!! We started getting intermittent vibration on shaft from motor to outdrive at about 2000 rpm and above and when turning. I limped back to the dock.Thinking gimble and or u joint needs replaced I am thinking of pulling outdrive soon to inspect it. How do you know if the coupler is bad. What steps would you all do to troubleshoot this issue.

Rough spots when turned.Also I would just put a new one in with u joints and make sure you align it with a alignment bar.It could just be a alignment issue but If you have not changed it and plan on keeping the boat its great insurance
