Purple wire is generally +12 V Ignition Switched. From my last adventures in Mercuiser, I know that the choke needs +12 V when the ignition is in the on/run position. The choke is closed when the ignition has been off for a while, and a bi-metal strip inside the choke control heats up with the ignition in the on/run position and eventually opens the choke.
In my motor, the purple wire to the choke control comes out of a wiring boot from the opposite side of the motor, and is attached to the coil resistor wire as well as the alternator.
